About Contra Dance: Today, contra dances are being held all around the world with weekly, monthly and annual dances performed regularly, especially across the United States and the UK. These events are usually family-friendly, non-alcohol oriented and willing to accept beginners who want to learn. Events usually feature other types of dance, between longer contra dances. and are almost always accompanied by live band performance, with a caller announcing the various dance moves. Most dance tunes come from the Irish, Scottish and French-Canadian traditions, and feature both single tunes and medleys. The music played during a contra dance is most often built around a central instrument, often a fiddle, but we prefer pipes!
