What We Offer
Balmoral Classic 2024
Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024: The Balmoral Classic championship is the only solo bagpiping and Scottish snare drumming competition in the US exclusively for those age 21 and under. Entrants are required to meet strict standards based on amateur upper-grade competitive successes. Bagpiping entrants compete in two styles: Pìobaireachd, the classical music of Highland bagpiping, and MSR (march, strathspey and reel), the traditional bagpipe competition medley. Drummers compete in two styles: Hornpipe & Jig and MSR. The Overall is a combination of scores from Pìobaireachd and MSR for piping, Hornpipe & Jig and MSR for drumming. The 2024 Balmoral Classic will be an in-person event!
Balmoral Summer Camps 2024
During summer 2024, the Balmoral School held two weeks of instruction with two Piping & Drumming camps for all ages and ability levels. Stay tuned for the announcements of our 2025 instructors. Dates will be annouced for Kutztown, PA and Edinboro, PA camps. Each week will include instruction and performances by some of the world’s leading pipers and drummers, with opportunities for both individual and group instruction, as well as camp-wide activities suitable for all ages and ability levels.
What they’re saying
“This school was how I learned to be a good bagpiper. The instructors are world class.
And the administrators are the best (professional, kind, and fun!”
“Wonderful time, as always! Where else can you walk into
a teacher’s room at midnight and get help with a tune?”
“This is a great school for ALL pipers and drummers. From beginner
to advanced you will have a great time and learning experience.”
“The Balmoral Schools are run the way piping schools should be run.”
Iain McLellan, Pipe Major of the 12-time world champion Strathclyde Police Pipe Band
“I had a great experience at the 2015 Pittsburgh school! The instructors, classes and
workshops were top notch. Can’t wait to attend again this summer!”
“The instructors are experts in their field and help to produce rapid results and focused instruction.”
Craig Copeland, Kentucky session
“My teenage son had a wonderful week, learned 15 new tunes, made new friends,
learned from fabulous instructors and wants to go back.”
“They pushed us in small bites, challenging but not out of reach — truly understanding.”
Mike Bench, California session
“The Balmoral Classic helped to promote Pittsburgh’s place in the piping world,
while entertaining pipers and non-pipers alike.”
“Other pipers in our band went to other schools that had much larger classes and they did not receive
anything to compare to the small focused sessions at Balmoral. Being an older player I don’t have
time to waste.”
David Hopper, Illinois Session
